MGMT oracular spectacular review

MGMT is one of those bands i've heard soo much hype about for quite a long time so i decided to finally cave in and give them a shot.

the album kicks off with the single 'time to pretend' which i'm sure everyone has heard before. its for sure a good, very catchy song but me being the electro geek that i am noticed something... the song is almost EXACTLY like the 2003 song 'perfect sound always' by girlsareshort. similarities include: intro, which comes into snyth line aka the real hook of the song, then goes into the almost exact drum beat (different tone on drums) with heavy snyths over it with some sort of solo at the end. i wont knock originality too much on this album because they do produce some strange nice melodies and noises. the higher duel vocals is almost girlsareshort-ish as well. the thing with this album that i noticed is none of the songs accept for 2 of them really jump out at me the rest are just kinda there, nothing super memorable. still the album has some pretty cool layers of synths as well as good guitarwork in parts. but again they should have used a drum machine that not everyone and their mom has sampled...

maybe this will grow on me after a few listens but who knows. i'm not exactly blown away after my first listen as most people are by it, or maybe its because they don't listen to a ton of electro. either way i'm seeing them in less than a month with justice. we'll see if the live show really grabs me and makes me appreciate the album more.

final score- 6.1/10
